Picking the right surfboard size

Selecting a surfboard depends on multiple factors: Your weight, height, level, type of wave… Surfboards nowadays have certain measurements to inform the rider about the capacity as well as how the board might function in the wave. Therefore, picking the right surfboard size is not as hard.

Here are some basic rules on selecting your first or next surfboard:

An absolute beginner:

The board, you are aiming for in this stage, should be a super stable board that’s going to keep you floating. It should be wide for more stabilization. The board can be any length, as long as it’s one foot taller than you, so you can paddle comfortably and are not falling off.

In this case you need to start with something that has great amount of volume, is soft and has lots of foam. This can be either a Soft board, or a fun board

Intermediate surfer:

Intermediate surfers are people that know how to easily catch waves, decide which face to take (left or right), even though their body doesn’t completely synch with the movements.

These surfers should pick a board that challenges them a little bit, for example by choosing a fish board, mid-length or retro surfboard. This is excellent for paddling effortlessly to catch waves, and due to less volume on these board, it enables them to start learning their first turns and maneuvers.

Expert surfers:

If you fall into this category, it is obvious that you need a high performance short board. These types of board are super light, finely tuned, perfect for massive maneuvers. Keep in mind that it requires a great amount of fitness to paddle and catch waves with a board like this. An expert surfer will easily ride an HPS that’s the same height as him with ease and perform greatly in different types of waves.
